Eremein has emerged as the new weight-for-age star of the autumn after a sterling training effort by Allan Denham returned him to the winner's circle in the Group One Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill.
The AJC Australian Derby winner was forced to miss the spring after requiring surgery to remove bone chips in his knee, discovered following a brief winter campaign in Brisbane last year.
Denham has patiently nursed him back to form and said it was wonderful to see him back to his best, especially as he is owned by long-time supporters of the Denham stable, Geoff and Beryl White.
"It's great, especially for the Whites, there's not many more loyal owners than them," Denham said.
"It's not just me, it's a family thing with dad (trainer Jack) and all my staff, I can't do it on my own.
"It's hard to get any good horse back, you know they've got the ability but whether they come back or not is the thing. This horse is just a pleasure to train."
Denham will now set his sights on returning to Rosehill in a fortnight to tackle The BMW (2400m).
"We've got the cake and now we've got to get the icing," he said.
Glen Boss parked Eremein in a perfect position behind the speed which was set by dual Epsom Handicap winner Desert War.
On straightening Boss switched the gelding to the better going on the outside and Eremein steamed home to beat the Lee Freedman-trained Our Smoking Joe by a length with Desert War another short half-head away third.
There was some drama shortly before the winning post when Boss raised his arm in triumph and Eremein shifted in onto the placegetters.
It did not affect the final result but Boss was fined $1,000 and copped a blast from chief steward Ray Murrihy.
"Enough's enough, you could have cost the connections of Our Smoking Joe $44,000," Murrihy said.
"If Jim Cassidy (Our Smoking Joe) clips heels and comes down it's worse.
"It's foolish and it can't go on."
Boss agreed.
However, the three-time Melbourne Cup-winning jockey had nothing but praise for Eremein and expects him to again be hard to beat in The BMW.
"He is a good weight-for-age horse and I'm just glad I backed my judgment because all the others have fallen apart and he is my flagship at the moment," Boss said.
"I won't say he can't be beaten next time but this horse is still on an upward spiral."
Victorian trainer John McArdle was looking after Our Smoking Joe for Freedman and said the race went to plan but Eremein was too good on the day while Andrew Baddock, who manages the Gooree Pastoral Company Syndicate that races Desert War, said the gelding would have his next start in the Doncaster Handicap.
