Eremein (Timber Country - Marrego - Marscay) today scored in the GI AJC Derby at Randwick, this
followed his success in the GI Rosehill Guineas two weeks earlier.
The win, his sixth from twelve starts, took his prizemoney tally to $1.838 million.
While success might have been easy to predict for the Danehill/Marscay cross,
the mating which produced the Australian Derby (G1) winner, Eremein, was not
such an obvious one. He does, however, provide a nice continuity to the Marscay
angle, as he is owned by Geoff and Beryl White, who also owned Marscay, and is
trained by Allan Denham, son of Marscay’s trainer, Jack Denham.
Eremein is a son of the much-travelled Woodman horse, Timber Country. A son of the
great broodmare, Fall Aspen, Timber Country was the leader of his crop at two, when
he captured the Champagne Stakes (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). He trained
on well, and although he won only one of five starts at three, that victory came
in the classic Preakness Stakes (G1), and he also took third in the Kentucky Derby (G1).
Timber Country was sold to commence his stud career in Japan, where he was Leading
Freshman Sire; shuttled to Arrowfield Stud, and then went to the United Arab Emirates.
Prior to Eremein, his best runner has been Balletto, a UAE-sired and U.S.-raced filly
who last year won the Frizette Stakes (G1) and took second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile
Fillies (G1). He’s sired three other Australian stakes winners, the Wakeful Stakes (G2)
winner Timbourina; Sam Sung a Song, winner of the Liverpool City Cup (G3); and the Gosford
Cup (G3) winner, West Country. He’s also had six stakes winners in Japan.
Eremein’s dam, Marrego, won only once, over 1000m as a two-year-old, but she also finished
second in the Silver Slipper (G2 and Reginald Allen Quality Handicap. Eremein’s grandam, Rewhite,
a daughter of Vain, also won only once, but her dam, Regal For Me (by the Sir Ivor horse, Geilgud),
was a tough mare who scored seven times, earning black-type with a win in the Robert A. Lee Stakes.
Ermein’s fifth dam, Santa Regina, is an imported daughter of the English Derby winner, Santa Claus,
Eremein’s pedigree is virtually a complete outcross at six generations, but there are some
interesting connections further back.
Timber Country’s sire, Woodman, is out of a mare inbred to La Troienne through the
three-parts-sisters Busanda and Striking. Tucked away in the pedigree of Gielgud
(sire of Eremein’s third dam) is Mr. Busher, a brother to Striking.
Gielgud’s dam, the great mare Best in Show (also in the female line of Redoute’s Choice),
is a Hyperion/War Admiral cross, as is the granddam of Timber Country, and she has an
extremely similar background to Intriguing, the grandam of Woodman (all of which
suggests trying Redoute’s Choice with mares by Woodman and Timber Country).
Marscay gets into the La Troienne act too, as he has Better Self, who is by La
Troienne’s only son, Bimelech, and is closely related to Busanda, Striking and
Mr. Busher. In the light of this, it’s probably significant that Timber Country’s
previous best Australian runner, Timbourina, goes back in tail-female line
to La Troienne through Striking.
As a footnote, we can also mention that Eremein’s fourth dam is by Battle-Wagon,
who combines Never Say Die and Hyperion. Never Say Die is a three-quarters
relative to Glamour, the third dam of Woodman, and Woodman’s grandam has a very
similar background to Battle-Wagon. Battle-Wagon is also in Timber Country’s
Australian graded stakes winner Sam Sung a Song.
