Tsuimai shows promise for Whites

Prominent owners Geoff and Beryl White celebrated a return to the Group race winners' club when the very promising Tsuimai scored a brilliant win in the Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at Rosehill.

It's been three years since the famous purple and white colours have saluted at the top level and Beryl White was temporarily lost as she made her way to the podium.

"It's been so long, I've forgotten where to go!" she said.

The Whites have raced many outstanding gallopers over the years including Tsuimai's dam Triscay, an Oaks-winning daughter of their famous Marscay, a star on the racetrack and in the stallion barn.

"It is special to us because he is out of Triscay," Geoff White said.

"And he's by Thunder Gulch who was a (Kentucky) Derby winner out of an Oaks mare so we are definitely looking at the Victoria Derby with him.

"We'll head to the Spring Champion Stakes and take it from there."

Tsuimai had a chequered run in the $1 million Golden Rose last time out when ridden by Darren Beadman but with Zac Purton aboard the colt slid to the front easily and was allowed to roll along.

When he straightened up, he really let loose and cruised to a three-length win over Terracotta Bay who had tracked him all the way.

Square One was third a further short head away while the favourite Handsome Ransom never looked a winning chance, finishing ninth almost six lengths from the winner.

"He's not a sit and sprint horse," Purton said. "He was able to get things his own way and let down good in the straight.

"He's a very, very nice horse."

Most of his rivals will also head to the Group One Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick in a fortnight with Anthony Cummings not too discouraged by Handsome Ransom's performance.

"Paddy (jockey Patrick Payne) said the ground was too hard and he seemed to feel it," Cummings said.

"But we still have plenty of options and as long as he pulls up okay we'll press on to the Spring Champion.
